History of Acupuncture

Acupuncture is an ancient form of healing that originates from China which predates recorded history. It originated in China many centuries ago and soon spread to Japan, the Korean peninsula and elsewhere in Asia. Acupuncture is widely used in health care systems in the countries of this region; it is officially recognized by governments and well received by the general public.

Although acupuncture was introduced to Europe as long ago as the early 17th century, scepticism about its effectiveness continues to exist in countries where modern Western medicine is the foundation of health care, especially in those where acupuncture has not yet been widely practised. People question whether acupuncture has a true therapeutic effect, or whether it works merely through the placebo effect, the power of suggestion, or the enthusiasm with which patients wish for a cure.

World Health Organization has recognized acupuncture is an effective treatment for more than 80 conditions. Acupuncture can be regarded as the method of choice for treating many chronically painful conditions around the world, including Vancouver. The effectiveness of this ancient Chinese medical system has already been established in controlled clinical studies.

Acupuncture originated in China over 3,000 years ago. It is part of the Traditional Chinese Medicine system.  Acupuncture helps to prevent illnesses by improving the overall functionality of the body’s immune and organ systems. Acupuncture has the ability to:

  • o Relieve pain
  • o Enhance immunity
  • o Balance, harmonize and strengthen the activity of the internal organs
  • o Relax and strengthen the muscular and skeletal systems
  • o Calm the mind, relieve anxiety and nervousness
